Accident leads to lynching of man, car set ablaze in Tripura's Unakoti district

A man was lynched and a vehicle was torched by a mob in the Kalishasan tea garden area of Kailashahar under Unakoti district, following a road accident on Tuesday that left a local worker injured.

The incident occurred when a car collided with a tea garden worker and crashed into a roadside drain. The victim of the accident, identified as Logen Uran, sustained a leg fracture and was later taken to Unakoti District Hospital by Fire Service personnel.

In the immediate aftermath, the vehicle’s occupants fled into the nearby tea estate. A mob soon tracked down one of them—Pradip Das, a resident of Ratiabari in Kumarghat—and lynched him to death inside the tea garden. The mob later returned to the crash site and set the car on fire.

Senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police Sudambika R., Additional SP V. Darlong, and SDPO Jayanta Karmakar, rushed to the spot with a large police force and brought the situation under control.

When the police officers were identifying the body, another passenger from the vehicle, Nirmal Das of Pecharthal market area, came out of hiding and surrendered.

He informed police that there were three individuals in the car at the time of the accident. The third occupant, Dipen Debnath of Kumarghat, managed to escape and return home safely.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Kailashahar sub-division.
