Admin restricts heavy vehicles on Howrah, Katakhal embankments in Agartala

In a decisive step to protect crucial flood-control structures, the West Tripura district ad
ministration has imposed a complete ban on the movement of heavy vehicles over the embankments of the Howrah river and Katakhal.

The order, issued by West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar under Rule-30 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, takes immediate effect.

"No heavy motor vehicles shall ply in the embankment area of Howrah River and Katakhal. In case of violation the Police Officers are directed to immediately seize the vehicle and present the same before the undersigned", the order said.

It strictly prohibits plying of heavy vehicles on the embankments and warns of punitive action against violators. Police authorities have been directed to seize any vehicles flouting the order and place them before the district administration.

This measure has been taken to prevent damage to the embankments and ensure public safety, an official said.

Officials highlighted that both rivers are prone to overflowing during monsoon, leading to flooding in low-lying areas on the city’s outskirts.

The embankments serve as vital flood-protection barriers for a large portion of Agartala, which has long struggled with recurring water-logging.
