Agartala, Sept 21: Aspiring medical students in Tripura will have additional opportunities to pursue MBBS as Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) expands its annual intake from 150 to 250 seats from the 2026-27 academic session.

According to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, now, the AGMC has the highest number of MBBS seats permissible by the NMC.

The approval marks a significant expansion of medical education capacity in the state and is expected to benefit students from Tripura as well as other parts of the Northeast.

The Chief Minister welcomed the decision and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their support in expanding medical education facilities in the state.

In a social media post, Dr. Saha said the enhanced intake would open up more avenues for young people aspiring to enter the medical profession and contribute to strengthening Tripura’s medical education and healthcare ecosystem.

The latest increase places AGMC among medical institutions across the country with an annual MBBS intake of 250 seats. 

Several established institutions, including Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College in Chennai and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, have similar intake capacities.

The expansion comes amid a broader push to increase medical education capacity and strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country.

For Tripura, the addition of 100 MBBS seats is expected to widen access to medical education and help build a larger pool of trained medical professionals in the years ahead.
