AIIMS team reaches Tripura for collaboration, CM holds meeting for better healthcare

The Tripura government has taken a decisive step toward redefining its healthcare landscape in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

A delegation from AIIMS, New Delhi, arrived in Agartala on Saturday to lay the foundation for a strategic collaboration aimed at modernizing medical infrastructure and services in Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital.

Rather than a ceremonial visit, the AIIMS team—led by its Director, Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas—dove straight into groundwork, holding a crucial strategy session with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and top officials.

The meeting, held at the Tripura Institution for Transformation, marks the beginning of what is being seen as a blueprint for comprehensive health sector reform in Tripura.

This initiative targets systemic transformation. Discussions centred around deploying AIIMS’ expertise to shape AGMC and GBP Hospital into institutions capable of meeting quality medical education, hospital administration, and patient care, according to official sources.

The Chief Minister urged the AIIMS team to actively guide. He emphasized the urgent need for advanced systems such as telemedicine, super-specialty services, and digital healthcare records.

The Chief Minister stated that the government is giving priority to the development of healthcare services and infrastructure, especially at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital, along with other healthcare institutions.

AIIMS Director Dr. Srinivas, accompanied by specialists Dr. Ramesh Agarwal, Dr. Lakshmitej Undavalli, and Dr. Aruna Kumari, responded positively, offering full support in reshaping healthcare delivery in the state’s prime referral hospital.

The team advocated for a long-term plan involving smart hospitals, emergency care modernization, skill development, and IT-led paperless administration.

Health Secretary Kiran Gitte presented the current health scenario, including bottlenecks in infrastructure and service delivery, and outlined areas requiring intervention.

A detailed review was undertaken of the on-going projects at AGMC and GBP Hospital—many of which, the delegation noted, could benefit from expert recalibration.

Crucially, the AIIMS team isn’t limiting its role to consultations. Later in the day, they conducted a ground-level assessment of the AGMC and GBP Hospital examining service capacity, administrative systems, and clinical facilities.

The meeting was also attended by key stakeholders including MLA Mina Rani Sarkar (Chairperson, Rogi Kalyan Samity), OSD to CM Parmananda Sarkar Banerjee, Director of Health Services Dr. Tapan Majumder, AGMC Principal Dr. Anup Saha, GBP Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, and former DHS Dr. Sanjib Debbarma, among others.

With AIIMS’ involvement, the AGMC and GBP hospital now looks set to accelerate its journey toward a more resilient, inclusive, and technology-driven healthcare system.
