Agartala, Mar 29: In a remarkable success, Anita Tripura from Dhalai district of Tripura, became the first athlete from the state to win a bronze medal in Senior National Kurash Championship.
She has created a history by winning the medal in the 44 kg category at the 15th Senior National Kurash Championship, being held from March 27 to 29 at Maa Kankeshwari Devi Vidyalaya Sports Stadium in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
Anita secured the medal on the second day of the competition, becoming the first athlete from Tripura to win a medal in Kurash at a senior national-level championship.
Hailing from Ambassa Forest Quarters area in Dhalai district, Anita earlier won a silver medal at the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) event held in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, showcasing consistent performance in the sport.
This time, she achieved the national success after competing against strong opponents from states including Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and West Bengal.
Her achievement was widely appreciated by several leaders and sports officials, including Tripura Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy, Kurash Association president and MLA Abhishek Debroy, vice-president Dipayan Chowdhury, BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma, and Kurash Association General Secretary Rahul Bhattacharjee, who is also a member of the Tripura Sports Council.
Bhattacharjee stated that there is a possibility of more medals for Tripura in the ongoing competition.
Meanwhile, sports enthusiasts in the state said Kurash is progressing rapidly in Tripura and urged the Sports Department and Tripura Sports Council to provide greater support, open more coaching centres, and ensure proper training facilities so that more athletes can bring medals and represent the state at the international level.
