Another Milestone in Tripura Healthcare: 5th Kidney Transplant Successful at GBP Hospital

Agartala, Nov 06: Tripura’s healthcare sector has reached yet another milestone, as the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital successfully performed their fifth kidney transplant — reaffirming the state’s growing medical excellence.

This latest achievement highlights the vision and commitment of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, under whose initiative the life-saving kidney transplant facility was first introduced at GBP Hospital.

The fifth transplant, conducted on November 4, 2025, involved a 32-year-old patient from Kalyanpur in Khowai district. A close well-wisher of the patient came forward to donate a kidney voluntarily, setting a heartwarming example of compassion and humanity.

The complex procedure was carried out by a joint team of experts from AGMC & GBP Hospital and Shija Hospital, Imphal. Both the donor and recipient are reported to be stable and are recovering under close medical supervision.

From AGMC & GBP Hospital, the surgical and nephrology teams comprised Dr. Bijit Lodh, Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Jiban Debnath, Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Udayan Saha, and Dr. Reshmi Das.

Representing Shija Hospital were Dr. Soumyarendra Paonam, Dr. Maharabam Mahale, and Dr. Galliver Potsangbam.

The anaesthesia team included Dr. Bhaskar Majumder, Dr. Chirashree Chowdhury, and Dr. Tapan Debbarma from AGMC, and Dr. Anand Nagom and Dr. Apollo Khundakpam from Shija Hospital.

The entire process was closely coordinated under the supervision of Senior Nursing Officer-in-Charge, Tapati Chakraborty.

According to Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, all kidney transplants at GBP Hospital strictly adhere to national medical protocols and require prior approval from the state’s authorization committee — ensuring compatibility, safety, and ethical compliance.

It may be recalled that Tripura’s first-ever kidney transplant at GBP Hospital was successfully performed on July 8, 2024, marking a historic leap in the state’s medical capability.

The continuity of successful transplants since then stands as a testament to the government’s focus on advancing healthcare access within the state and reducing dependency on facilities outside Tripura.
