Agartala, Aug 25: In the midst of Tripura's severe flood crisis, where many have united to aid those in need, one ASHA worker from a remote village in South Tripura district has set an example through her extraordinary dedication.
The ASHA worker, Kartamala Tripura, who hails from Harbatali village in Sabroom, played a crucial role in ensuring the safe delivery of a baby under perilous conditions.
On August 23, as relentless rains inundated the village, 27-year-old Shimla Tripura went into labor. With the entire area submerged and mobile networks down, the possibility of reaching a hospital was nonexistent. Communication was cut off, and the situation appeared dire.
Amidst the rising floodwaters and the growing desperation, Kartamala Tripura heard of Shimla’s predicament. Driven by an unwavering sense of duty, she navigated through the flood, braving the treacherous conditions to reach the expectant mother’s home. Despite her limited experience in delivery, Kartamala was determined to help Shimla in delivering the baby safely.
The night turned into a battle for life, filled with anxiety and uncertainty. But Kartamala's resolve paid off when the cries of a newborn baby boy filled the room, bringing a wave of relief to everyone present.
However, the relief was short-lived, as Shimla began to bleed profusely—a life-threatening complication after delivery that could have turned fatal. As the hours passed, Shimla’s condition deteriorated. The villagers, helpless yet hopeful, watched as Kartamala fought to keep the new mother stable.
The family, realizing the gravity of the situation, made the bold decision to carry Shimla on their shoulders through the flooded terrain to reach the main road at Manughat—a grueling four-hour trek the next day.
At 8 pm, they reached Shyamsingh village, where a local youth helped them contact the sub-divisional administration. The response was swift. By 9:30 pm, DCM Ratan Das had arranged for a disaster response team, who arrived by boat to evacuate Shimla.
Shimla was admitted to Sabroom Sub-Divisional Hospital at 3 am, where doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize her. Although her condition required specialized care, Kartamala’s timely intervention had given her a fighting chance.
The mother, now suffering from anemia due to significant blood loss, was referred to Santirbazar District Hospital for further treatment. Her newborn son, thankfully, was in good health.
In a heartwarming gesture, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sabroom Shiv Jyoti Dutta personally contributed Rs. 3,000 to support the family, understanding their financial constraints.
As Kartamala Tripura’s dedication brought smiles to Shimla and her family, the story gave an impression that adversity can't dampen the compression. (Inputs taken from Tripura Times)
