Assault on doctors, driver’s tragic death: THRC takes suo-motu cognizance

The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo-motu cognizance of two incidents—assault on two on-duty doctors and a driver’s tragic death.

In both the incidents the THRC headed by chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh has issued notices to concerned authorities and sought response.

The two Medical Officers- Dr. Avik Deb and Dr. Litan Das were manhandled by some miscreants belonging to patient party in the GBP Hospital while the doctors were engaged in discharging duties on August 3 last.

The Commission said it was violation of human rights since the authorities had failed to protect those medical officers from being manhandled in the hospital premises of the GB Hospital.

Accordingly, the Commission has issued notices to the Director of Health Service, Government of Tripura to submit his report after due enquiry as to why he failed to protect the medical officers on duty when there was adequate security personnel posted in GB Hospital premises.

The Superintendent of Police, West Tripura has also been asked to inform the Commission about what steps were taken against those miscreants and to protect the interest of Medical Officers posted at GB Hospital.

The Commission in its order on Wednesday asked the Director of Health Service, Government of Tripura and SP West to submit the reports by the next date- August 21.

In another incident, a lorry driver has tragically lost his life near Chakmaghat TSR camp under Teliamura police jurisdiction two days ago.

One truck, bearing registration no AS01-LC-5102, loaded with cement was proceeding towards Agartala from Lansang met with an accident at that place pinning its driver Mihir Lal Debnath, who was also the owner of the vehicle in the cabin of the Truck. His leg was crushed and struck inside the cabin, but he was alive, fully conscious, and he was screaming for help for over seven hours. He begged to be rescued for hours and fell silent.

Based on media reports, the commission in its order observed, “This shows the clear violation of human rights in the State of Tripura due to inaction of Disaster Management Authority, District Administration, Police Department, Fire Service, and Civil Defense.”

On Wednesday, the Commission has issued notice upon those authorities to submit a report separately after due inquiry within 15 days from the date of receipt of the notice. The THRC has listed the matter on August 27.
