Bamboo-based jewellery made by Tripura SHG Didis draws attention

Agartala, Mar 19: A group of rural women entrepreneurs from Tripura has earned widespread appreciation for crafting an innovative bamboo-based jewellery box, highlighting the growing success of self-help groups in transforming traditional skills into sustainable livelihoods.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM), showcases how structured training and grassroots entrepreneurship are reshaping the economic landscape for women in the state.

The product—an intricately designed bamboo fusion jewellery box—has been developed by members of self-help groups operating under the Dhalai District Mission Management Unit.

Nearly 30 women artisans were trained in advanced bamboo fusion techniques, enabling them to convert locally sourced raw materials into refined, marketable items. The jewellery box, noted for its durability, aesthetic appeal, and eco-friendly nature, reflects a blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design sensibilities.

The product recently gained attention during a high-profile exhibition held at international exhibition hall, Hapania, Agartala, where it was showcased before the Vice President of India, other dignitaries and visitors. The handcrafted item drew praise for its fine finishing, innovative design, and sustainable appeal, standing out as a symbol of rural creativity.

Officials associated with the programme said such initiatives are playing a key role in enhancing income opportunities for women while promoting environmentally responsible products. They emphasized that efforts like these are helping position Tripura as a hub for bamboo-based handicrafts, while also strengthening market access for rural artisans.

The success of the initiative reflected the impact of skill development and institutional support in enabling women to build viable enterprises rooted in local resources.
