Beyond call of duty: Two Tripura doctors donate own blood to save patient’s life

Agartala, May 03: In a remarkable display of humanity, two doctors from Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital donated blood to save life of a patient.

The doctors- Dr. Antara Ray Bhowmik and Dr. A. Kiran have set an example of humanitarian service in Tripura’s healthcare system,
The patient, a woman from Shantirbazar, was admitted to GBP Hospital on March 17. She was diagnosed with a serious condition: choledochal cyst with neoplasm of the pancreas, requiring immediate surgical intervention.

However, just before the surgery, the doctors discovered that her hemoglobin levels were dangerously low and additional blood transfusion was critical to proceed.

At that crucial moment, when no family members or relatives were present at the hospital to provide the required A-positive blood, the two doctors selflessly volunteered to donate their own blood to save the patient’s life on April 30 last.

The Health department acknowledged and praised this humane gesture, noting how the evolving healthcare system in the state is not just about advanced treatments but also about nurturing a spirit of empathy and positive mindset among medical professionals.

This is not the first time that doctors in the state have stepped beyond their call of duty to help patients in dire need. But once again, their swift action ensured that the surgery went ahead without delay or complications, as the donated blood stabilized the patient’s condition during the operation.

Such stories remind us that beyond the technical aspects of medicine, it is the human touch — the willingness to stand by a patient in their most vulnerable moment — that truly defines the essence of healthcare.
