Agartala, Oct 29: Amid reported political turbulence and internal discord within the Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the party’s core committee convened a crucial meeting on Wednesday in the presence of central observers to discuss the recent developments.
The discussions, as informed by the source, also focused on alleged difference of opinion between BJP and its alliance partner Tipra Motha.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, BJP state president and MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, and former Union Minister of State Pratima Bhowmik attended the meeting.
Senior party leaders Dr. Sambit Patra, BJP’s Northeast coordinator, and Dr. Rajdeep Roy, the state observer, joined the deliberations to assess recent developments and internal grievances.
The meeting came at the backdrop of several controversial incidents that stirred the state’s political landscape and social media. Boxanagar MLA Tofajjal Hossain’s remarks targeting Deb and Bhowmik, Minister Sudhangshu Das’s “commission” comment to the media, and Bhowmik’s sarcastic response after her vehicle was stopped at a police barricade—all triggered widespread debate among party workers and the public alike.
Sources in the BJP confirmed that the party has issued a show-cause notice to the Boxanagar MLA, who may face disciplinary action pending his response. The leadership reportedly viewed these incidents as signs of growing factionalism within the party’s state unit, prompting the central leadership to intervene promptly.
The meeting also discussed coordination challenges between the BJP and its ally Tipra Motha, particularly in view of the upcoming Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, which are expected to be a key political test for the ruling party.
After the meeting, Chief Minister Saha shared a group photograph on his official social media accounts featuring Bhattacharjee, Deb, Bhowmik, Dr. Patra, Dr. Roy, and Minister Ratanlal Nath—a symbolic gesture aimed at dispelling speculation and conveying an image of unity among senior leaders.
Meanwhile, speculation is rife about a possible cabinet reshuffle, with reports suggesting that one minister may be dropped and a new face could be inducted soon.
