BJP protests Youth Cong leader’s ‘offensive and provocative’ remarks, demands arrest

The Sadar (Urban) unit of Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday staged a massive protest demanding the immediate arrest of Youth Congress leader Sahajahan Islam for his derogatory and communal comments on social media.

On Sunday evening, in a video message on social media, Sahajahan had launched a verbal attack targeting Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Tripura Police and some others—the way he talked in the video was utterly disrespectful. His remarks were also in the line of creating communal tensions.

Soon after the video circulated on social media, a protest was reportedly staged near Sahajahan’s house in Agartala on Sunday night and two Congress leaders- Ashis Kumar Saha and Sudip Roy Barman had to face the fury as they stood by the side of the Youth Congress leader.

The two Congress leaders’ backing to Sahajahan after his ‘offensive and communal’ remarks was widely condemned by the common people.

A delegation of BJP had filed a case against the Youth Congress leader at East Agartala police station seeking immediate action.

On Monday, hundreds of BJP Karyakartas joined the protest march led by Sadar (urban) district president Ashim Bhattacharjee in Agartala demanding immediate arrest of the accused. There was deployment of adequate security personnel in front of the Congress Bhavan, when the rally reached in front of it.

Bhattacharjee strongly criticized Islam for making “deeply offensive and provocative” comments not only against Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha but also Tripura Police, and leaders of BJP’s Minority Morcha.

A delegation later met West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar K and pressed for swift action.

In the meantime, the Youth Congress leader’s father Najrul Islam and brother Khairul Islam were already arrested as part of the investigation, while efforts are underway to track down the accused.
