Bye-polls in two assembly seats of Tripura on Sept 5, counting on Sept 8

Agartala, Aug 08: Two assembly constituencies in Tripura will go to bye-elections on September 5 next, as announced by the Election Commission of India on Tuesday.

The two constituencies are- Dhanpur and Boxonagar. The counting of votes will take place on September 8 next.

The Dhanpur seat fell vacant following the resignation of Pratima Bhowmik, the BJP candidate who fought in the seat in the last assembly polls. The bye-election was necessitated at Boxonagar constituency following the demise of sitting CPM MLA Samsul Haque.

According to the ECI press note, the gazette notification of the bye-election would be issued on August 10. The last date for filing nomination is August 17. The nominations will be scrutinized on Aug 18. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is August 21.

Along with the two seats in Tripura, by-polls will also be held in five assembly seats of Jharkhand, Kerala, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on the same day.

As soon as the ECI announced the bye-elections, the saffron brigade footsoldiers launched a stormy campaign on social media seeking votes in favour of the party.

The two seats are expected to witness high-voltage campaigns of various political parties including BJP and CPM; the poll campaigning will commence soon. However, it is not yet clear if the CPM would contest the bye-elections in understanding with the Congress.
