Agartala, May 13: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sanjit Chakraborty, a proclaimed offender, from Kolkata on Tuesday in connection with a major chit fund scam in Tripura.
Chakraborty, who served as the Chairman and Managing Director of M/s Cosmic Negociators Pvt. Ltd., had been evading arrest since 2013 when the Tripura Police first registered an FIR against him.
The cases were later taken over by the CBI under notifications from the Tripura and Central Governments in 2013 and 2023, under the DSPE Act, 1946.
According to an official press release, Chakraborty faces charges in two separate cases. The first, filed in 2015, involved defrauding the public of around Rs. 7.48 crore, while the second, filed in 2024, concerned a scam amounting to Rs. 27.13 lakh. In both cases, he was listed as an absconding accused.
The CBI said the arrest was the result of extensive field investigations, technical and physical surveillance, analysis of call records, and open-source intelligence, which ultimately led officers to Kolkata.
Chakraborty is expected to be brought to Tripura for court proceedings after a transit warrant is secured from Kolkata authorities. The investigation into the scam continues.
