Agartala, Jan 16: A five-member team, led by Sharad Chandra, Commissioner (Flood Control) of the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, recently visited Sabroom in South Tripura district to assess the initiatives taken by the central government to control erosion along the Feni River.
The team's visit was part of the preparations for the upcoming India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission meeting, which aims to strengthen cooperation between the two nations on shared water resources.
During their visit, the team inspected the water treatment plant near the Maitree Setu, a critical infrastructure project constructed as part of an agreement between India and Bangladesh to utilize Feni River water for drinking purposes.
The team focused on the process of drawing water from the river for treatment, ensuring that the plant is functioning efficiently.
The visit also included a trip to the Feni Riverbank, where the team entered through the border gate at the Gangphira area near Maitree Setu. This firsthand assessment of the ground situation enabled the team to identify practical challenges and opportunities for cooperation between India and Bangladesh.
The upcoming meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission is expected to build on the outcomes of this visit, fostering greater collaboration on shared water resources and addressing common challenges such as erosion and water management.
