Agartala, Sept 5: Tripura’s iconic heritage site Unakoti is set to receive fresh attention from the Centre, as Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat assured cooperation for its preservation and development during a meeting with State Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy in New Delhi on Thursday.
Roy, while presenting the state’s case, emphasized that Unakoti is not just an archaeological marvel but also a cultural and spiritual landmark with immense tourism potential.
He stressed that with the right infrastructure and conservation measures, the site could emerge as a major attraction on the global tourism map.
Key proposals placed during the meeting included eco-friendly infrastructure development, boundary demarcation, renovation of the Natmandir, rejuvenation of the sacred kund, and better amenities for pilgrims and visitors.
Plans also cover parking facilities, improved entry gates, street lighting, drinking water, public conveniences, road widening, and dedicated market stalls to create livelihood opportunities for locals.
“The Union Tourism Minister gave a patient hearing and assured all necessary support from the Centre. This will help preserve the heritage of Unakoti while boosting tourism and creating new income avenues for people in the region,” Roy said after the meeting.
