Centre sanctions Rs 252 cr for Tripura’s post-flood recovery efforts

Agartala, May 29: In a major relief for Tripura, the Central Government has sanctioned Rs 252 crore to support restoration and reconstruction activities in the aftermath of the devastating floods that ravaged the state in August last year.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Friday said the assistance was approved following sustained efforts by the state government to secure financial support for rebuilding damaged infrastructure and rehabilitating affected families.

The floods had triggered widespread destruction across several districts, disrupting transport networks, public utilities, agricultural activities and livelihoods. Large stretches of roads, bridges and essential public infrastructure suffered heavy damage during the disaster.

According to the Chief Minister, after the floods, the state government conducted an extensive Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) to evaluate the scale of destruction and prepare a roadmap for long-term recovery. Based on the assessment, a detailed proposal seeking financial assistance was submitted to the Centre.

In a social media update, he mentioned that the first instalment of Rs 75.60 crore under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) was released to the state on May 26, paving the way for the launch of priority restoration works.

The Chief Minister expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for extending support to Tripura during one of the most challenging natural disasters faced by the state in recent years.

According to officials, the sanctioned amount is expected to significantly strengthen reconstruction initiatives, expedite pending infrastructure repairs and help thousands of affected residents return to normalcy.
