Agartala, Sept 20: Tripura is set to expand its cricket infrastructure with the state government earmarking around 30 acres of land at Sekerkote for a proposed cricket academy, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said on Sunday.
Announcing the initiative at the annual award distribution ceremony of the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA), Dr. Saha said the proposed academy would strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem and create a structured platform for identifying and developing emerging cricketing talent.
The Chief Minister said cricket has a strong following across Tripura and emphasised the need to build infrastructure that can translate the enthusiasm for the sport into opportunities for young players.
“Cricket is a game of immense passion, enthusiasm and emotion,” Dr. Saha said, adding that the TCA has been taking various initiatives to promote the sport, upgrade infrastructure and nurture talented players.
He said the government was committed to expanding opportunities and facilities for the younger generation through sports.
Dr. Saha also said construction of the international-standard cricket stadium at Narsingarh was nearing completion. The upcoming infrastructure, along with the proposed academy, is expected to provide players with better facilities for training and development.
Highlighting the importance of sustained support for athletes, the Chief Minister congratulated the players who received awards at the ceremony and those honoured for their achievements. He said such recognition would encourage sportspersons to work harder and inspire others to pursue excellence in their respective fields.
TCA officials, players and sporting representatives from different parts of Tripura attended the programme.
The Chief Minister said that improved practice grounds are also being built in places like Kailashahar, Belonia and Jirania to promote cricket at the rural level.
Highlighting the success of the state's cricketers, the Chief Minister specially congratulated Mani Shankar Murasingh for setting a unique example by becoming the first cricketer from Tripura to play 100 Ranji Trophy matches.
He also mentioned the consistent performance of cricketer Sridam Pal and the contribution of guest players Hanuma Vihari and Vijay Shankar.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that cricket unites everyone, making them forget differences of religion, caste and language.
Today, Dr. Saha felicitated Tripura first-class cricketer Abhijit Sarkar for his special achievements in the Duleep Trophy 2026-27.
Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy stressed the need to expand sporting opportunities and facilities for players from rural areas. He also called for greater integration of technology into sports development and training.
Referring to Tripura athlete Asmita Dey’s representation at the national level and her achievements on the international stage, Roy urged young players to set clear goals and work consistently towards achieving them.
TCA Secretary Subrata Dey, TCA Vice President Upananda Debbarma, Joint Secretary Jayant Dey and other officials were present.
