Tripura is expected to witness a major transformation in rail infrastructure with the Indian Railways is considering a future double-line railway project between Agartala and Badarpur.
The announcement was made by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava during his visit to Tripura, where he also reviewed key railway projects and operational preparedness.
The prospect of a double-line railway network connecting Agartala with Badarpur is, according to official sources, part of the NFR’s vision for strengthening rail connectivity in the northeast region.
Addressing a press conference at Agartala Railway Station on Friday, Shrivastava said Tripura is poised for another significant leap in rail transportation with the imminent introduction of an electric Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) service between Agartala and Karimganj. The route will become the first within the NFR network to operate MEMU services, offering enhanced passenger comfort, quicker acceleration and increased carrying capacity.
The announcement came on the sidelines of the General Manager's two-day inspection tour of railway facilities in Tripura. Accompanied by senior railway officials, Shrivastava reviewed infrastructure and operational arrangements at Agartala and Sekerkote railway stations under the Lumding Division.
During the inspection, he assessed track conditions, station facilities, maintenance standards and the progress of ongoing development projects. Particular attention was given to railway infrastructure that requires constant monitoring due to Tripura's heavy monsoon conditions and challenging terrain.
At Agartala Railway Station, the General Manager reviewed passenger amenities, including escalators, lifts and station facilities aimed at improving commuter experience. He also inaugurated a newly installed lift at the station.
Shrivastava inspected the Agartala Coaching Depot to evaluate coach maintenance, cleanliness, safety measures and operational readiness. He further reviewed facilities at the Running Room for train crew members, stressing the importance of staff welfare in maintaining safe and efficient railway operations.
Highlighting Tripura's rapid railway growth over the past decade, railway officials noted that the state's connectivity has expanded considerably since the arrival of broad-gauge services in 2016. Major projects such as the Agartala-Akhaura international rail link, expansion of express train services and the proposed introduction of MEMU and Vande Bharat trains are expected to further strengthen Tripura's integration with the national rail network.
Railway authorities said the inspection reflects NFR's continued emphasis on infrastructure modernization, passenger convenience and operational safety, while future projects such as the proposed Agartala-Badarpur double-line corridor could play a crucial role in supporting the region's economic and transportation growth.
