ECI orders probe into political violence in Tripura’s Jirania

Agartala, Jan 19: A day after the political clash erupted between Congress and BJP supporters at Jirania sub-division in West Tripura district, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday ordered a probe into the incident.
The Election Commission of India has asked the Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura to obtain report from DGP Tripura through Chief Secretary and submit the report by 3 pm on January 20 next, an official communication said.
Several people including AICC Tripura in-charge Dr. Ajay Kumar were reportedly injured after a clash broke out between two groups of BJP and Congress in Jirania sub-division on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura Kiran Gitte in press conference on Thursday said eight persons were already arrested and preventive action was taken against 18 persons in connection with the Jirania political violence.
He reiterated that immediate action would be taken if any such incident occurs at any part of Tripura where assembly election is scheduled on February 16 next.
