Extensive security arrangements made in Tripura for Durga Puja: DGP

Agartala, Oct 08: Tripura Police has made extensive security arrangements to ensure that the upcoming Durga Puja is held peacefully across the state, a top official said on Thursday.

More than 10,000 police personnel and TSR (Tripura State Rifles) personnel will be deployed during the Puja days to maintain law and order and assist visitors.

Acting Director General of Tripura Police G S Rao said this at a press conference at the state police headquarters on Thursday.

The DGP said Durga Puja is the biggest festival in the state. So far, 2,905 Durga Pujas have been recorded across the state this year, and more are expected to be reported in the next 10 days. Last year, 2,948 Pujas were held. This year, 256 police help centres will be opened statewide, compared with 220 last year. To maintain security and monitor crowds at various pandals, 180 to 190 CCTV cameras will be installed, along with 159 watch towers.

He said markets and shops are currently crowded with Puja shoppers, and 29 police patrol vans are working to let people shop without fear.

He said around 450 Durga Pujas will be held in Agartala this year. The traffic department has planned to manage vehicle congestion for visitors during the Puja days.

He said, no-entry restrictions will be in force at various places in Agartala from 5 pm to 1 am, with green corridors for special needs. A police control room will run 24 hours to maintain law and order and assist visitors.

The number of women police will be increased during the Puja days to help women in particular. Special arrangements will be made for the safety of rail passengers.

The state police have already met Puja committee representatives, who have been asked to arrange volunteers at their pandals during the Puja days.

He also urged air and rail passengers to plan ahead so that they can reach the airport and railway stations on time.
