Agartala, June 10: A probe into the escape of a suspected ganja smuggler from GRP custody at Belonia Railway Station in South Tripura district has taken a dramatic turn with the arrest of a constable after ganja was allegedly recovered from his quarters.
The controversy began after GRP personnel intercepted a vehicle inside the Belonia Railway Station premises and seized a quantity of cannabis.
According to sources, four individuals were travelling in the vehicle when the operation was launched. Amid the search, three of the occupants reportedly managed to flee, while one suspect was taken into custody for questioning.
However, the detained individual allegedly escaped shortly after being brought to the GRP police station. The incident triggered widespread criticism, particularly after videos surfaced on social media showing a man running through nearby areas, allegedly moments after escaping custody. The footage quickly gained attention and raised questions over the handling of the accused.
In response, senior GRP officers from Agartala rushed to Belonia and initiated an internal investigation to determine how the suspect managed to escape and whether there had been any negligence on the part of police personnel.
During the inquiry, investigators reportedly searched the accommodation of GRP constable Jatindra Das. Sources claimed that cannabis was recovered from his room, leading officials to suspect a possible connection between the recovered substance and the narcotics seized during the earlier operation.
Based on the findings, Das was taken into custody and later formally arrested. He was produced before a local court after completion of legal procedures.
Authorities have not yet revealed the exact quantity of cannabis recovered or confirmed whether it formed part of the narcotics seized at the railway station. Investigators are also examining possible lapses that led to the suspect's escape and whether any police personnel were involved in facilitating it.
