Heavy rains disrupt normal life in Tripura: Admin monitoring situation, says CM

Agartala, Aug 02: Continuous rainfall since Thursday afternoon disrupted the normal life in parts of Tripura including South Tripura district.

While the heavy rains caused severe water-logging in various places and damaged crops, a flood-like situation has been created in parts of South Tripura district.

As per initial reports from the South Tripura district, six houses have been damaged partly and the water level in several rivers has been increasing.

In a social media post, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha asserted that the administration is closely monitoring the overall situation and necessary preparations have been put in place to deal with any emergency.

"There is no need to panic, the administration is closely monitoring the overall situation and prepared to deal with any eventuality. We appeal to the people residing across the district to stay alert & contact the local administration in case of any emergency", the Chief Minister mentioned.

According to official sources, the south Tripura district has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the past 24 hours.

According to IMD report, Belonia has received highest rainfall of 214.40 mm and whereas Sabroom & Bagafa have been recorded as 152.00 mm & 80.00 mm respectively till 1.30 pm of Friday.

The heavy rainfall has caused rising of water levels in river Muhuri & Lawgang.

The water level of Muhuri river has crossed safe limits and safe shelters have been kept ready. Besides, miking for precautionary evacuation already underway. Waterlogging has been reported in isolated locations from Belonia and Santirbazar urban areas and steps have already been taken for shifting of affected families and /or pumping out of water.

As reported, so far 6 houses have been partly damaged in Belonia Sub Division. Two cows died due to electrocution near Iswar Chandra Vidyalaya in Belonia.

Aapda Mitra and Civil Defence Volunteers, TSR, TSECL, Forest and other QRTs are on standby and will be pressed into action if the situation worsen.

Meanwhile, the IMD predicted more rainfall in Tripura on Saturday and issued warning.
