Hilsa makes a festive entry into Tripura

Agartala, Sept 18: The much-awaited arrival of Hilsa has added a festive flavour to Tripura as the first consignment of the prized fish reached the state through Akhaura Integrated Check Post on Thursday.

For Bengalis, Durga Puja celebrations remain incomplete without the delicate taste of Hilsa on the platter. Keeping the tradition alive, Bangladesh has once again permitted export of the fish to India ahead of the festive season.

The initial consignment of nearly 1,200 kilograms has already landed in the state, with traders expecting more shipments in the coming days.

Local fish markets are now gearing up to welcome eager buyers who wait all year to savour the seasonal delicacy.

According to importers, this year’s Hilsa is comparatively smaller in size than last year’s catch, which could impact the market price during the Puja rush.

However, the enthusiasm among consumers remains high, with many already anticipating the joy of cooking and sharing the traditional dishes that Hilsa inspires.

Reports suggest that Bangladesh has approved the export of 12 tonnes of Hilsa to India this season, at a base rate of 9 US dollars per kilogram.

With this, the festive dining tables in Tripura are set to be enriched by the unmistakable taste of Hilsa, marking the beginning of a season of celebration.
