Hit by train, 'Tumour' succumbs to injuries in designated 'elephant corridor'

Agartala, Dec 31: A 35-year-old wild elephant, Tumour, succumbed to its injuries on Monday night. The jumbo was hit by a local train in the Shalbagan area of Lakshmipur ADC Village in Tripura's Khowai district two days ago.

Despite valiant efforts by forest officials and veterinary doctors, Tumour breathed its last around 10 pm on Monday night. The elephant had shown signs of improvement earlier in the day but its condition deteriorated in the evening.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious concerns about  safety in designated elephant corridors.

An investigation revealed that the train was traveling at 50 km/h, exceeding the 20 km/h speed limit in the area since it's a designated elephant corridor.

The Forest department has filed a formal complaint with the Northeast Frontier Railway, Lumding Division, accusing the loco pilot of violating speed regulations.

Tributes poured in for Tumour, with senior forest officials, including Khowai District Forest Officer Akshay Balu Bhorde, conducting rituals to honor the elephant. Locals also gathered to pay their final respects.

Speaking to the reporters, the DFO said, all possible efforts were made to save the life Tumour. A team of experts from Jamnagar, Gujarat, had already departed to assist while plans were also in place to airlift the elephant for advanced treatment on Tuesday. But, the elephant succumbed to injuries before the plans worked.
