How an under-trial international ATM hacker escapes from Tripura

Agartala, July 21: As the police investigation into the sensational escape of international ATM hacker Hakan Zamburakan from Tripura is making progress with arrests many people, it has been revealed that the escape was a well-designed plan.

According to Tripura Police sources, the investigation revealed that the conman was using mobile phone inside the Tripura central jail and he had sometimes used whatsapp communication to design the plan.

The ‘use of mobile phone’ inside the jail raised a serious concern in the whole system since it evidently showed the presence of a racket in the jail helping the under-trials even the convicts to escape.

The international fraudster and ATM hacker- Hakan Zamburakan, an under-trial inmate of Tripura Central jail had fled away from Agartala’s GBP hospital on July 9 last and possibly crossed over the Indo-Bangla border. He had visited the GBP hospital for twelve times in the past two/three months.

When police initiated a thorough investigation into the case, it was revealed that Hakan had visited a food outlet at Kunjaban where he was reportedly received by two persons. After the escape through a toilet of the hospital, he was taken to the food outlet by a Bolero vehicle-- it was evident from the CCTV footage collected by police.

Meanwhile, Tripura Police on Tuesday arrested seven more persons in connection with Hakan’s escape and all of them were produced before the court on the same day.

“Six jail inmates-- Mohammed Hannan, Rafiqul Islam and Fettah Aldemir (the three were arrested along with Hakan from Kolkata in November 2019), Sumit Banik and Umar Sharif, both accused in bank manager Bodhisotto murder case, along with Mithun Bhowmik—total seven persons were arrested on Tuesday and produced before the court. They were sent to seven days police remand till July 25,” said Bidyut Sutradhar, who prosecuted the case.

The prosecutor also said that section 130 of the IPC was now included in the case.
According to police sources, the total number of arrests in Hakan’s escape case now stood 11. Earlier Sakib Tripura, Sukhen Bhowmik and Ranakumar Debbarma were arrested in connection with the case.

“In the course of investigation, it was found that Hakan after his escape had communicated with Swarnakumar Tripura and one other by using a Bangladesh SIM card. So, there is every reason to believe that the ATM hacker might have crossed over to Bangladesh.

A woman, who possibly helped the conman enter Bangladesh, is also under the scanner,” a senior police officer said. Police sources said, Shakib Tripura among the arrestees had received Rs 2.99 lakh through Western Money Transfer from someone in Turkey. And, in all likelihood, the money was used to plan the sensation escape of Hakan.

Hakan Zamburakan along with three others were arrested from Kolkata in November 2019 in connection with large-scale ATM hacking cases that involved over Rs. 40 lakh in Tripura. Tripura Police is expecting arrests of more people in the case and is likely to seek assistance from Inetrpol to arrest the fugitive.
