IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tripura, Admin on alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tripura between August 21 and 25, prompting authorities to step up preparedness in all districts.

As per the IMD advisory, on August 21–23, heavy to very heavy showers (7–20 cm) predicted in isolated places of South Tripura (orange alert), while the remaining districts are expected to experience heavy rain (7–11 cm)-- yellow alert.

On August 24–25, similar intense downpours are predicted over South Tripura, Gomati, and Sepahijala districts (orange alert), with the rest of the state under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall.

The administrations has already put all preparations in place. Emergency operation centres are being reinforced, community volunteers have been mobilized, and rescue equipment including boats is being checked to ensure readiness, according to official sources.

Officials recalled that during the same period last year, Tripura faced one of its worst floods in recent history—causing losses worth nearly Rs. 15,000 crore, claiming 24 lives, and affecting around 17 lakh people.

Learning from that disaster, the authorities have taken extra precautionary measures this year to deal with any eventuality.
