Agartala, Feb 13: In a remarkable event for wildlife conservation, a rare Jerdon’s Baza was rescued for the first time in Tripura from Surya Sen Para, Panisagar, on Thursday.
The rescue operation was carried out by Animal Aids Alliance, an NGO that collaborates with the Forest Department to manage human-wildlife conflicts and protect endangered species.
The organization received an alert from Girija Shankar Bhattacharya, a local resident and nature enthusiast.
Responding swiftly, trained rescuers Rajesh Gupta and Sandeep Malakar coordinated with the Panisagar Forest Office before arriving at Bhattacharya’s residence. The bird was safely retrieved and later handed over to the Forest Department’s Juri Range patrol team.
Experts confirmed that the Jerdon’s Baza was in good health with no injuries. It is believed that the bird, possibly disoriented after flying long distances, sought refuge near a human settlement due to the absence of large trees in the vicinity.
Expressing gratitude for Bhattacharya’s timely intervention, officials from the Forest Department and Animal Aids Alliance acknowledged his contribution to the rescue effort.
According to Forest Department records, this marked Tripura’s first documented rescue of a Jerdon’s Baza, making it a significant moment in the state's wildlife conservation history.
