Agartala, Oct 15: An old jail premises in Dharmanagar has embarked on a new journey, transforming from a place associated with confinement into a marketplace of opportunity, creativity and community enterprise with the inauguration of Juri Jail Haat on Thursday.
Located on Jail Road, opposite the Circuit House in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, the new initiative aims to provide a platform for Self-Help Group (SHG) members to showcase their products, expand market access and build sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The launch also marked the unveiling of the JURI brand logo and the introduction of 19 locally produced SHG products from across the district.
The transformation of the old jail premises into a livelihood and marketing hub gives the initiative a distinctive identity. Beyond its role as a marketplace, the Juri Jail Haat seeks to connect local producers with consumers while creating greater visibility for the skills, craftsmanship and entrepreneurial potential of rural women.
The inaugural programme was led by Aparna Nath, Sabhadhipati of North Tripura Zilla Parishad. Jahar Chakraborty, MLA of the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly Constituency and Chairperson of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council, attended the event as the chief guest.
Among those present were Chandni Chandran, District Magistrate and Collector of North Tripura; Tarit Kanti Chakma, Chief Executive Officer of the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM); L. Darlong, Additional District Magistrate (PP); officials from the TRLM State Mission Management Unit, including its Non-Farm Vertical; Block Development Officers from all eight blocks; former Dhalai District Mission Coordinator Taite Reang; district and block-level officials, SHG members and other guests.
A marketplace with a wider purpose:
At the heart of Juri Jail Haat is the idea of turning community skills into viable economic opportunities. For SHG members, access to a dedicated marketplace can help bridge the gap between producing goods and reaching potential customers.
The launch of the JURI brand is also intended to give local products a common identity and improve their market visibility.
The introduction of 19 SHG-made products at the opening marks the beginning of this effort. By bringing locally produced goods under one platform, the initiative offers an opportunity to highlight the diversity of products emerging from community-based enterprises in North Tripura.
The project also reflects a broader approach to rural livelihood development, in which women’s collectives can move beyond production at the household or village level towards organised marketing and enterprise management.
More than a shopping destination:
Juri Jail Haat has been designed as a multi-purpose destination, bringing together retail, food, handloom and recreational facilities within the old jail complex.
The planned attractions include the Juri Jail Showroom, Juri Farm Fresh, Juri Jail Restro Cafe and Juri Jail Handloom. A children's play area and space for small celebrations, including birthdays and anniversaries, are also part of the facilities. A District Aggregation Centre is another key component, intended to support the collection and consolidation of locally produced goods.
Additional attractions and facilities are expected to be introduced in the coming days, further expanding the complex's role as a community-oriented commercial and social space.
From a historic site to a space for new beginnings:
The choice of the old jail premises gives Juri Jail Haat a compelling story of repurposing and renewal. A site once associated with confinement is being adapted to create space for enterprise, interaction and economic participation.
Its long-term significance will depend on how effectively the platform connects SHG producers with customers, sustains demand for local products and enables participating groups to strengthen their businesses.
For local entrepreneurs, the new complex offers a dedicated space from which to build recognition and explore new market opportunities.
With its combination of locally made products, food, handloom and community facilities, Juri Jail Haat aims to become a destination where visitors can discover the products of North Tripura while supporting the people and groups behind them.
As Juri Jail Haat opens its doors, its central promise lies in giving local enterprises a visible place in the community—turning skills into opportunities and a repurposed public space into a platform for livelihoods and collective growth, according to official sources.
