Legislative Assembly temple of democracy: Tripura Governor

Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Wednesday said that a legislative assembly is often described as the temple of democracy, but what truly makes this temple sacred is not its walls or its chambers, but the spirit of the people who serve within it.

He said, the elected legislators are in the Assembly not for themselves, but to serve the people who have reposed their faith and trust in them.

The Governor stated this after inaugurating the 63rd Foundation Day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly at the Assembly Lobby in Agartala today.

Addressing the Governor noted that the state has made significant progress in maintaining law and order, fostering peace, and accelerating development across sectors, including infrastructure and agriculture.

He said new avenues have opened up for development, particularly for the indigenous communities. Expressing optimism, he said members from both the treasury and opposition benches would continue to work together to build upon these achievements.

The Governor highlighted the journey of evolution from the merger of Tripura with the Indian Union to the attainment of the status of a full-fledged state.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ratan Lal Nath delivered the keynote address, describing the occasion as a milestone in the journey of the Tripura Legislative Assembly.

He urged elected representatives to remain committed to the welfare of the people. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also addressed the gathering, highlighting the contributions of former legislators and describing Indian democracy as unique and one of the strongest democratic systems in the world.

Former Assembly Speakers Jotirmoy Nath, Jiten Sarkar, and Ratan Chakraborty shared their reflections on the Assembly's evolution and contribution to the democratic process.

Padma Shri awardee and former Assembly employee Naresh Chandra Dev Varma also addressed the gathering, recalling his long association with the institution and its growth over the decades. He was felicitated by Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu during the programme.

The function concluded with the presidential address by Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia. Welcome address was delivered by A.K., Secretary of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. The programme was also attended by other members of the State Council of Ministers and MLAs.
