A tragic love triangle took a brutal turn in Tripura, ending with the murder of a youth whose decomposed body was recovered from a shop's deep freezer in Gandacherra under Dhalai district on Wednesday.
The chilling discovery has sent shockwaves across the state.
The victim, Shariful Islam (24), an electrician working under the Smart City project in Agartala, had been missing for four days. His family had suspected foul play from the beginning, alleging that he was kidnapped.
The case took a dramatic twist when locals in Indranagar apprehended a man named Dr. Dibakar Saha (28), who had reportedly called Shariful out on Sunday night under the pretext of giving him a gift. It soon became clear that jealousy and unrequited love were at the heart of this gruesome crime.
According to police sources, Shariful had been in a relationship with Dibakar’s cousin for over a year. However, the girl’s family disapproved of the relationship due to religious differences. Adding fuel to the fire, Dibakar himself was in love with the same girl, turning the situation into a dangerous love triangle.
Driven by jealousy and resentment, Dibakar allegedly masterminded the murder. Based on his confession, police recovered Shariful’s body—stuffed inside a trolley bag and hidden in a deep freezer belonging to Dibakar’s father’s shop at Narayanpur, Gandacherra. The body, with hands tied, was found in an advanced state of decomposition. The body was then sent for post-mortem to the Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Hospital.

The incident not only exposed a deeply personal motive but also a disturbing level of involvement from Dibakar’s family.
Police arrested six people in connection with the murder: Dibakar Saha, his parents Dipak and Debika Saha, along with their accomplices Animesh Yadav, Joydip Das, and Nabanita Das.
The West Tripura District Superintendent of Police, Dr. Kiran Kumar K, confirmed the arrests and assured that a thorough investigation is underway. He said, the murder had taken place near South Indranagar at Joydip Das' house-- the youth was strangled to death and the body was then shifted to Gandacherra with the help of Dibakar’s father and mother.
This horrifying incident raised serious concerns among the people across the state.
