Maiden visit to Tripura, Bangladesh envoy inspects ICP, meets CM

Riaz Hamidullah, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, commenced his first official tour of Tripura, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties and assess cross-border infrastructure projects.

The four-day visit underscores Bangladesh's growing interest in deepening regional connectivity and economic cooperation with India’s Northeast.

During his trip, Hamidullah held a meeting with Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, where both sides reportedly exchanged views on enhancing trade, connectivity, and cultural exchanges. While details of the discussions remain undisclosed, officials described the dialogue as forward-looking and productive.

A key highlight of his itinerary was a visit to the Integrated Check Post (ICP) near the India-Bangladesh border, where he interacted with senior officials of the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI).

Speaking to the media afterwards, the envoy likened the India-Bangladesh relationship to the natural flow of rivers between the two nations—organic, seamless, and deeply rooted in people-to-people connections.

The economic interface between Tripura and eastern Bangladesh is not just about trade—it reflects a shared history and geography, he remarked, adding that his engagement with LPAI officials was focused on resolving operational bottlenecks and improving logistical synergy.

As part of his tour, the High Commissioner is scheduled to inspect the progress of the Agartala-Akhaura international rail link—a key connectivity project expected to significantly reduce travel time and boost commerce between the two countries.

He will also visit the Nischintapur railway station, which serves as a key junction in the cross-border rail corridor.

Further, he will travel to Sabroom in South Tripura to visit the recently inaugurated Maitri Setu, which links Tripura with Bangladesh’s Chittagong region, offering new avenues for trade.

The High Commissioner is slated to call on Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Sunday, marking the diplomatic importance of the trip.
