The scenic Narikelkunja in Tripura came alive on Saturday with the commencement of the two-day Monsoon Mango Fiesta 2025, an event that showcases the fusion of agriculture and tourism in the state.
Inaugurated by Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, the festival highlights the growing synergy between local produce and rural tourism.
In his inaugural address, Chowdhury emphasized that harmony among tribal and non-tribal communities creates a peaceful environment that naturally attracts tourism, which in turn fosters economic development.
Organized by the Tourism Department, the event celebrates Tripura’s booming mango cultivation and the role it plays in empowering rural families.
The Minister noted that 184 families in the Narikelkunja region have gained financial independence by cultivating mangoes across 287 hectares of land, producing both indigenous and 14 international varieties.
He also announced that the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department will soon introduce new initiatives to further boost mango farming in the region, aiming to make it a key driver of agro-tourism.
Highlighting the growing popularity of the state as a tourist destination, Chowdhury cited the success of the Tourism Promo Fest held last year, which led to a significant increase in both domestic and foreign tourists. To cater to this surge, he said, 50 new homestays have been introduced in Narikelkunja, promoting rural tourism and generating new income opportunities for locals.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including MLA Nandita Reang, Tourism Secretary U.K. Chakma, Dhalai Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Sushmita Das, MDC Bhumikananda Reang, TTAADC Executive Member Rajesh Tripura, Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Wahid A, Tourism Director Prashanta Badal Negi, and SDM Gandacherra Chandrajoy Reang.
As part of the celebration, local mango growers set up vibrant stalls displaying a diverse range of mango varieties. The Minister and accompanying officials toured the stalls, interacting with cultivators and lauding their efforts in transforming mango farming into a model of sustainable entrepreneurship.
