Agartala, July 30: The achievements of Tripura's women in various fields are highly commendable, and they are earning appreciation across the country for it, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Vijaya Rahatkar said on Thursday.
She expressed hope that women in the state will continue to achieve more milestones in the coming days.
Speaking at a press conference at Sonartari Guest House in Agartala, the NCW Chairperson shared her experiences from her three-day tour of the state.
Highlighting the effectiveness of the POSH Act, she said the law should be properly implemented in every government office, as it plays a major role in ensuring the safety of working women.
She said special attention must also be paid to ensuring the safety of women within the police force. She also mentioned that she had discussions with the state's Chief Secretary, senior state administration officials, and senior BSF officials on taking more effective steps to prevent trafficking of women.
Rahatkar further said, she met Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and discussed various government schemes undertaken for women in the state.
During her three-day visit, the NCW Chairperson yesterday took part in various programmes in Gomati district related to women's safety and increasing women's participation in different areas of society.
She spoke with "Lakhpati Didis", learning about their needs and challenges, and also inspected products made by them. She took part in a review meeting with women public representatives, discussed the current status of women in society with everyone present, and offered necessary advice to the concerned parties.
She also attended a programme on child marriage at Rajarshi Hall in Udaipur, in the presence of the Minister for Social Welfare and Social Education, Tinku Roy, which was also attended by schoolgirls from different schools in Udaipur.
On Thursday, she took part in another programme organized by the Tripura Commission for Women. Speaking on this occasion, she said the central government has taken up an initiative to make India free of child marriage by 2030, expressing hope that this goal will be achieved with everyone's cooperation, and urging state governments to extend their support as well.
Meanwhile, a workshop on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) was held today at Sukanta Academy in Agartala. It was organized by the National Commission for Women and NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar attended as chief guest. Speaking at the workshop, she said it is the responsibility of every institution to ensure a safe and dignified environment for women at the workplace.
She called for setting up Internal Committees under the POSH Act at every workplace, organizing regular awareness training, ensuring quick and impartial resolution of complaints, and protecting the confidentiality of victims. She added that preventing sexual harassment against women requires not just enforcement of the law but also building a culture of sensitivity, mutual respect, and accountability in the workplace.
Others present at the event included State Women's Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma, Special Secretary of the State Social Welfare and Social Education Department Tapan Kumar Das, and the Deputy Director of the National Commission for Women, among others.
