NDA secures landslide victory in Tripura VC polls

Agartala, Oct 6: The NDA—BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT secured a landslide victory in the Village Committee polls under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The election to Village Committees was held on September 28 last and counting of votes took place from October 5.

State Election Commissioner Dr. P.K. Chakraborty in a press conference said, the counting of votes for the Village Committee elections concluded on Monday, with TIPRA Motha emerging with the highest number of seats.

As per the final results, TIPRA Motha won 3,428 seats, followed by the BJP with 859 seats. Independent candidates secured 173 seats, while the CPI(M) won 87, IPFT 33 and the Indian National Congress (INC) 14 seats, the Commission said. 

In terms of Village Committees where parties secured a majority, TIPRA Motha obtained a majority in 457 Village Committees, while the BJP secured a majority in 94 VCs. The CPI(M) and IPFT secured majorities in two Village Committees each, while Independents obtained majorities in 31 Village Committees.

According to the State Election Commissioner, counting was conducted at 45 counting halls across 44 counting centres throughout the state. A total of 5,33,808 voters in the ADC areas exercised their franchise, in addition to 6,628 EDC voters, taking the total number of votes cast to 5,40,436. The overall voter turnout stood at 81.29 per cent.

The vote share figures released by the Commission showed TIPRA Motha securing 46.76 per cent of the votes, followed by the BJP with 28 per cent, CPI(M) with 12.90 per cent, Independents with 7.74 per cent, IPFT with 2.74 per cent and the INC with 1.86 per cent.

The Commissioner further informed that no nomination papers were filed for three seats.

Dr Chakraborty congratulated the voters, district election officers, returning officers, sector officers, counting personnel and senior police and security officials for ensuring that the counting process was conducted smoothly and peacefully.

He also thanked representatives of the media for their cooperation during both the polling and counting processes.

State Election Commission Secretary Anurag Sen was also present at the press conference.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha congratulated all the NDA candidates who secured victory and said it is evident in the results that the people rejected Cong-COPM ideology.

“With an impressive mandate, NDA-nominated candidates have won 4,320 out of 4,597 seats. My sincere gratitude to all the voters for their trust, support and participation. This result reflects the democratic mandate of the people and their confidence in the elected representatives,” the Chief Minister wrote on social media. 

Earlier Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said, the results will restore the power of the grassroots back to the people.

“Today’s result will restore the power of the grassroots back to the people . The long struggle in the Supreme Court which I personally fought to ensure that our constitutional rights is restored. Which ever party wins today the most important thing is that the people have won. This is the power of Tiprasa,” he commented on social media.
