NLFT still operating from Bangladesh, likely to intensify its mission in Tripura to meet fund crisis: Report

Agartala, July 08: The banned extremist outfit NLFT which is stil operating from two camps of Bangladesh is likely to intensify its activities in Tripura to meet fund crisis, an intelligence report said.

“As the insurgent groups were now facing paucity of funds, they were in search of new sources for fund collection-- some businessmen, ration dealers and contractors in some specific locations on the bordering areas of Tripura had already been earmarked as potential targets for fund collection, extortion and some OGWs are being engaged to execute such work,” the report said.

The NLFT is still operating from two camps- Silchari and Ujjanchari under Rangamati district of the neighbouring country Bangladesh, with the strength of over 40 cadres, according to the report.

Besides, two safe houses are also being used by the NLFT cadres-- one is Dhaka Safe House and another is Chittagong Safe House.

A transit camp in Segunbagan area, 5 km away from India-Bangladesh international border, is functional from October 2020 onwards. This camp has no permanent infrastructure and mostly they have built some Bamboo structures. All the cadres use open spaces and some polythene sheets to sleep during the night in the rainy season, the report said.

Segunbagan was the same transit area that was used for kidnapping three NPCC workers from Tripura on 07th Dec, 2020 and also being used for operational movement / activities. This area was being used by NLFT or IIGs as an Assembly Area to launch any operation or activities.

As per the report, while Biswa Mohan Debbarma @ D. Baithang - Advisor is in Mizoram and Jacob Hrawngkhal @ H. Uastwng – SS/President is in Myanmar, some other NLFT leaders including Utpal Debbarma @ D. Uomthai - SS Secretary General, Sonadhan Debbarma @ Sanchar - SS Finance Secretary and Sachin Debbarma @ D. Sengphui - SS Youth Affairs, Culture, Agriculture Secretary are in Bangladesh.
The intelligence inputs said, Upendra Reang @ R. Kothorma- Council Member is now looking after the organizational matter of the group.

There was a movement of the NLFT cadres inside Tripura in the month of March 2021, subsequently one of the cadres of this group surrendered but the remaining cadres returned back to Bangladesh.

Most of the activities of NLFT (BM) group were across the Ganganagar and Raishyabari Police Station in Dhalai district. In the recent time, activities of most of the cadres including their top leaders, field cadres as well as Bikram Bahadur Jamatia @ Bomthom have not been seen along the Indo-Bangladesh Border opposite to Tripura, hence it is being assumed that they might have gone back to Silchari Camp.

The intelligence agencies in their report said a small group led by Dilip Debbarma has influence in Baramura Ranges, Khowai, Champahour, Mugiakami, Teliamura areas under Khowai district and the movement of this group is also observed in Ganganagar, Raishyabari, Gandachera and Chawmanu under Dhalai district.

The intelligence report mentioned, “the NLFT (BM) group is presently suffering from severe financial crisis following which the top leaders are in deep stress. To resolve the issue of financial crisis, a meeting consisting of top leadership and their field cadres was held in the month of April/May 2021. In view of the above, in the coming days, it may witness some kind of action/activities like extortion demand, kidnapping etc. by NLFT (BM) group/outfit to meet their financial crisis.”

In this context, all the sister security agencies have been put on alert to keep close watch on this aspect and review the security of personnel / Coys especially those who are working on ground.

The inputs available in the report indicated that the insurgents who surrendered in the recent past wer may again opt to re-join the Insurgent groups on being allured.
