Nomination for Panchayat polls in Tripura: Cong, CPM allege attacks, BJP counters

Agartala, July 18: The Congress and CPM alleged attacks before and after filing nominations for the Panchayat polls, while the ruling BJP rejected the claims saying that the opposition parties had failed to find candidates.

The Congress MLA- Sudip Roy Barman alleged that he along with 10 others suffered injuries in brick batting and stone pelting near Tepania block under Gomati district in Tripura on Thursday, the last day of filing nomination for the ensuing Panchayat polls.

Roy Barman alleged that similar attacks on the Opposition workers were reported from some other blocks including Matabari, Dukli, Rishaymukh, Durga Chowmuhani and Salema.

Meanwhile, he also claimed that the Communist regime was better than the present situation.
The Pradesh Congress held a rally in Agartala, protesting such incidents ahead of the Panchayat elections. A central Congress delegation along with state leaders met Governor of Tripura Indrasena Reddy Nallu at Raj Bhavan, Agartala and discussed the issues including alleged 'political violence'.

Tripura will go to Panchayat polls on August 8 and the counting of votes will take place on August 12.

On the other hand, CPM state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury condemned such attacks and alleged that opposition candidates were forcibly prevented from filing nominations in some places.

However, the ruling party rejected the allegations and expressed confidence of winning all the seats on the three-tier Panchayat elections.
