Agartala, Aug 11: Tripura has set October 31 as the target to complete the digital transformation of its entire healthcare delivery system, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said on Tuesday, as the state moves towards a more modern, technology-driven, integrated and citizen-friendly health system.
Gitte announced the target at a workshop on the Integrated Health Information Management System (IHMIS) held at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala, where West Tripura district was formally launched as the state’s model district for digital healthcare implementation.
The programme was attended by National Health Authority (NHA) CEO Dr Sunil Kumar Barnwal and senior health officials from both the Centre and the state.
A day earlier, Dr Barnwal visited Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Agartala Civil Hospital to assess its digital healthcare infrastructure, paperless operations and the use of digital systems in both the outpatient (OPD) and inpatient (IPD) departments.
He also inspected the hospital’s “Computer on Wheels” system, which enables medical staff to access, record and manage patients’ health information digitally at the bedside. Barnwal noted that he had seen a similar system earlier in the United Kingdom.
Praising the digital infrastructure at Agartala Civil Hospital, Barnwal said he had rarely seen such an advanced and integrated paperless healthcare system in India. He said Tripura could emerge as a “Model Digital Health State” if it successfully implements its ambitious digital healthcare initiative.
He stressed the need to bring every citizen under the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) system, register every healthcare facility with the Health Facility Registry and ensure that doctors are enrolled in the Healthcare Professionals Registry.
Health Secretary Gitte said the Tripura Medical Council, Tripura Pharmacy Council, Tripura Nursing Council and Tripura Allied Health Council have already introduced online applications, digital payments and online issuance of certificates.
Pointing out that people are already accustomed to using digital services for banking, railway and air ticket bookings, insurance premium payments and school admissions, Gitte said the healthcare sector could similarly make a rapid transition from conventional manual processes to digital systems.
“Time is now our biggest challenge. However, our goal is clear and we are capable of completing this task,” he said.
Gitte said efforts were underway to complete the state’s comprehensive digital healthcare transformation by October 31. Once the digital integration is completed, Tripura is expected to emerge as one of the country’s leading model states in digital healthcare.
He said more than 32 lakh ABHA IDs have already been generated in the state, providing a strong foundation for building a comprehensive digital health ecosystem.
The programme also highlighted the achievements of Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana (CM-JAY), which form key components of Tripura’s health protection system.
As of June 30, 2026, more than 16.6 lakh Ayushman cards had been issued under PM-JAY in Tripura. Over 5.7 lakh beneficiaries had received cashless treatment under the scheme, while claims worth more than Rs 307 crore had been settled by empanelled hospitals.
A total of 9,283 beneficiaries had also availed themselves of cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals outside Tripura under PM-JAY.
Under CM-JAY, more than 6.3 lakh Ayushman cards have been issued, while over 92,000 beneficiaries have received cashless treatment. Claims worth more than Rs 50 crore have been settled under the scheme.
Another 2,218 beneficiaries have availed themselves of treatment at empanelled hospitals outside the state under CM-JAY.
During the programme, the guests interacted with four beneficiaries who had received cashless treatment for major surgical procedures. The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for receiving quality healthcare without having to bear the financial burden of treatment during difficult circumstances.
