Online self-enumeration for Census to begin in Tripura from July 17

Tripura will introduce online self-enumeration for the upcoming Census for the first time, with the facility to remain available from July 17 to July 31, Director of Census Operations, Government of India, Ratan Biswas, announced on Monday.

He made the announcement while addressing the 20th National Statistics Day celebration at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala. The day was observed to commemorate the 133rd birth anniversary of eminent statistician Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.

Speaking at the programme, Biswas urged citizens to use their own digital devices to complete the Census forms online within the stipulated period. 

He said the information submitted through self-enumeration would subsequently be verified by enumerators during the field verification process.

He further informed that door-to-door data collection across the state will be carried out from August 1 to August 30. The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Government of Tripura, will function as the nodal department for the Census exercise. 

District Magistrates will serve as Principal Census Officers in their respective districts, while the Municipal Commissioner will discharge the same responsibility for the Agartala Municipal Corporation area.

He appealed to all citizens to actively participate in the nationwide Census exercise.

The programme was organised by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics at Pragna Bhavan with the theme of strengthening evidence-based governance and policymaking through improved administrative data quality, inter-departmental data sharing, integrated use of information and institutional collaboration.

The event was attended by Director of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics Devananda Reang, who presided over the function, Professor Dr. Mrinal Kanti Debbarma of NIT Agartala, officials from various government departments, academicians, students and personnel associated with statistical work.

Delivering the welcome address, Reang said the effective use of administrative data is essential for making development planning and policymaking more evidence-based and efficient. 

He also announced that the Directorate, in collaboration with NIT Agartala, has developed a new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Portal, which was demonstrated during the programme. He expressed hope that the portal would improve accessibility and effective utilisation of reliable data.

Reang also called upon government departments, stakeholders and the public to extend full cooperation for the successful implementation of the self-enumeration system in the 2027 Census.

The programme also featured discussions on the importance of statistics, data-driven governance and the role of reliable data in development planning.

According to an official press release, Tripura has witnessed significant economic progress in recent years, with Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) increasing from Rs. 70,633 crore in 2022-23 to Rs. 89,682 crore (Advance Estimate) in 2024-25, while Per Capita Income has increased from 1.54 lakh to 1.93 lakh during the same period. 

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics continues to play a vital role in generating and disseminating official statistics to support planning and governance in the State.

The Directorate has also strengthened institutional collaboration through partnerships with premier institutions such as the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata and National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala, besides organizing capacity-building programmes on official statistics, administrative data management, Artificial Intelligence and evidence-based governance.

The observance of Statistics Day, 2026 aims to promote statistical awareness, strengthen the use of administrative data in governance and encourage greater collaboration among Government Departments, academic institutions and stakeholders for achieving sustainable and inclusive development.
