Permanent Bru settlement in Tripura, 3,232 families shifted so far

Agartala, Aug 04: Tripura government has permanently resettled 3,232 out of 6,959 Bru families in eight out of 12 identified locations so far, according to an official.

The Tripura government has undertaken the resettlement process following a quadripartite agreement signed between the Centre, Government of Tripura, Government of Mizoram and Bru leaders, Principal Secretary of Revenue Department Puneet Agarwal said on Thursday.

“Total 37,136 persons of 6,959 families have been targeted for permanent resettlement from seven Relief camps in North Tripura district to twelve new locations identified by the Tripura government. As of now 3,232 families have been rehabilitated in 8 locations,” he told the reporters.

As directed by the central government, all Bru families have to be resettled by August 31 next, he said, adding that the Bru leaders had submitted a list of 4473 families so far and the list for remaining 2486 families was yet to be received.

Meanwhile, 23 years after ethnic clashes in Mizoram forced 37,000 people from Bru community to take shelter in Tripura, the quadripartite agreement was signed in January, 2020. Earlier, some of the Bru families were repatriated to Mizoram in nine phases.
