Poila Boishakh ushers in traditional festive cheer across Tripura

Agartala, April 15: Tripura witnessed vibrant celebrations of Poila Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, with people across the state embracing the day in a spirit of tradition, joy and cultural pride.

From early morning, Agartala wore a festive look, as markets, temples and public spaces remained crowded with people stepping out to mark the occasion. Dressed in new clothes, families were seen exchanging warm greetings and visiting relatives and friends, creating an atmosphere of celebration throughout the city.

One of the major attractions of the day was the Halkhata ceremony and annual fair at Laxminarayan Bari in the capital.

Businessmen from different areas gathered at the temple premises to begin their new account books, following the age-old tradition of seeking blessings for prosperity in the New Year. The footfall at the venue remained high throughout the day, reflecting the deep cultural connection of the people with Poila Boishakh.

The festive rush was also visible at sweet shops, where people queued up to purchase doi and traditional Bengali sweets, continuing the custom of starting the New Year on a sweet note. Shopkeepers said the demand was significantly higher than on regular days.

Meanwhile, fish and meat markets in Agartala also experienced heavy crowds, with people purchasing items for special New Year feasts. A large number of buyers were seen opting for mutton and Hilsa fish, even as many voiced concerns over rising prices.

Despite the increasing cost of essentials, the enthusiasm for celebration remained undeterred, as the people of Tripura once again showcased their love for tradition, food and togetherness.

Poila Boishakh thus brought a wave of happiness across the state, strengthening bonds of family and community while keeping alive the rich Bengali cultural heritage.
