Political programmes restricted in Tripura capital till Diwali

Agartala, Sept 21: West Tripura district administration has imposed restriction on any kind of political movement in the state’s capital till Diwali following the threat of projected third wave of COVID19 and in apprehension of breach of peace.

The prohibitory order has already come into effect from 6 am of September 21 and it will be in force till midnight of November 4, next, according to the notification.

“….. it is also reported that supporters of political parties may try to commit mischief and any kind of further violence at Agartala city may result in sporadic clashes between political groups and may seriously affect the law and order situation,” the order reads.

The order also said that any kind of political meeting/ procession/ public gathering by any political party at present may deteriorate the law and order situation in Sadar police sub-division (under East and West Agartala police stations) and the situation may worsen if not controlled right now.

As per the order undersigned by District Magistrate and Collector, West Tripura- Rajib Dutta, if any person violated the prohibitory measures, action will be taken under section 188 of IPC and as per provisions of the Disaster Management Act- 2005.

Meanwhile, the High Court of Tripura quashed Trinamool Congress’ plea for permission to organize a Padayatra in Agartala on September 22 after the state government presented the order on Tuesday.

“After hearing the submission of the government side, the High Court of Tripura didn’t interfere in the state government’s decision. The case has been closed without grant of permission,” Advocate General Siddhartha Shankar Dey told the media.

Earlier on Monday, Single Bench of Justice Arindam Lodh had asked the state government to submit its report before the court regarding denial of permission to Trinamool Congress for the party programme by Tuesday.

However, TMC leader Subal Bhowmik told the media that the party would definitely organize the Padayatra in a peaceful manner and by maintaining the Covid protocols on September 22 next. He said that thousands of people from across the state would take part in the event in presence of All India Trinamool Congress general secretary- Abhishek Banerjee.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh was shifted to hospital on Tuesday after he complained of illness during interrogation in New Capital Complex police station.

Ghosh along with five others- Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen, Bratya Basu, Subal Bhowmik and Prakash Das was summoned in connection with August 8 incident of Khowai police station.

According to police sources, three among the six TMC leaders- Kunal Ghosh, Subal Bhowmik and Prakash Das appeared before police. After 15-20 minutes of questioning, Ghosh suddenly fell ill.

Meanwhile, AITC in a tweet said, "In line with the HC's decision not to interfere in policy decisions, we are postponing our scheduled events in Tripura. We will seek further clarity from the court on the limits to such arbitrary use of executive power."

According to a press statement, voters from 62 families joined the TMC on Tuesday.
