Prominent club's structure bulldozed in Tripura as govt takes firm stand

Agartala, July 17: An illegal construction of a prominent club in Tripura's Usha Bazar area was bulldozed by the administration on Wednesday early morning.

There were two points-- first, the structure of Bharat Ratna Sangha was erected on government (khas) land and second, some of the club members were involved in anti-social activities.
The club had hit the headlines after its secretary- Durga Prasanna Deb, alias Vicky, was shot dead on April 30 last. The sensational murder reflected an internal dispute between the two groups of the club. In the course of investigation, police also revealed some clues and arrested former president of Bharat Ratna Sangha Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury and others.
Further, it was found that the Club's building was illegally constructed on government land. On July 8 last, the a notice was served to the club authorities to either remove the structure or reply within July 15. Finally, the land was evacuated in the presence of West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar on Wednesday morning.
Many of the people viewed that the eviction drive served as a testament to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha-led government's zero-tolerance policy towards unlawful activities.
A section with vested interest questioned the demolition of building of a prominent club like Bharat Ratna Sangha but the state government's message was loud and clear.
Meanwhile, the state government is contemplating a plan to set up a healthcare facility in the site, previously occupied by Bharat Ratna Sangha.
