Agartala, Aug 28: The villagers of Durganagar in Ranirbazar under West Tripura district staged a road blockade demanding release of five persons arrested in connection with the recent violence in the area.
After an idol of goddess Kali was found defaced in the village, the unidentified miscreants attacked nearby areas torching at least 16 houses, and burning several vehicles late on last Sunday night.
Police have arrested five persons in connection with the incident.
The villagers on Thursday joined hands in protest and staged a blockade on the national highway-08 demanding release of the arrested persons.
Immediately after the information reached Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, he arrived at the scene and interacted with the agitators. The protest was withdrawn after Chowdhury's intervention. The agitators blamed police and said the five persons were wrongly detained.
“The main culprits who vandalized the idol have not been arrested yet. The five persons have been wrongly detained,” a protestor said.
The minister convinced the agitating villagers saying that blocking NH in such a way was not acceptable and it was hampering the government's image as well ass traffic movement, causing public suffering. He said, police have done their duty, now investigation would continue. He requested all to keep faith in law.
Superintendent of Police, West Tripura Dr. Kiran Kumar was also present.
