Agartala, May 19: Tripura’s young mountaineer Aritra Roy scripted a history by successfully summiting Mount Everest.
He is the first from the state to reach the world’s highest peak, a remarkable achievement that has brought pride to the entire region.
Roy began his expedition on March 16 from Agartala. After two months of intense preparation and a grueling climb through some of the world’s most treacherous terrain, he stood atop the 29,035-foot summit at exactly 7:31 am Nepal time on Monday, May 19.
His feat comes just days ahead of the 72nd anniversary of the first successful Everest ascent by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, which took place on May 29, 1953. The symbolic timing adds another layer of significance to Aritra's achievement.
The people in Tripura and beyond are celebrating the milestone.
Veteran climber Pranab Akhanda, a respected figure in the state's adventure sports circle, had publicly wished Aritra success before the final leg of his climb. Today, he joined countless others in congratulating the young adventurer for his courage and determination.
Aritra, the elder son of the late Sanjoy Roy—a noted football coach—and Kakoli Roy, overcame brutal weather conditions including high-altitude storms and sub-zero temperatures to complete his summit bid.
His resilience in the face of adversity has inspired many back home.
Although Aritra has reached the summit, the journey is far from over. He is currently making his way back down to base camp, navigating dangerous descents and unstable terrain.
With communication limited in the high-altitude region, updates remain sparse, but well-wishers across Tripura are united in praying for his safe return.
Aritra’s ascent not only marks a personal triumph but also highlights the growing presence of adventure sports in Tripura, signaling a new chapter for youth in the northeastern state.
