Resettled Bru people in Tripura demand separate Village Councils

Agartala, May 07: In a coordinated push for political autonomy, Bru resettlement communities across Tripura’s Kanchanpur and Ambassa sub-divisions held mass rallies on Wednesday, culminating in the submission of a formal memorandum to local authorities with demand for separate Village Councils.

Representatives from the Ashapara, Naisingpara, and Khasnampara resettlement centers marched to the office of Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ashish Biswas around 3:00 PM, demanding the immediate delimitation of their areas into separate Village Councils.

Led by figures including R. Lal Dosanga, Bipin Kumar Reang, and Aranjoy Reang, the delegation argued that distinct administrative recognition as separate village councils is the only way to ensure the local inhabitants receive proper representation and targeted development.

The movement gained further momentum as Bru representatives from Haduklau Para under the Ambassa sub-division raised identical demands, specifically calling for the official recognition of Bru settlement camps as separate Village Council ahead of the upcoming Village Committee elections.

Community leaders expressed deep frustration over years of persistent hardship and alleged that repeated appeals to the state administration have failed to yield permanent solutions.

Speaking to the press following the deputation, the representatives issued a stern ultimatum: if their demands for separate councils are not met before the polls, they are prepared to escalate their movement into a more intensive and widespread agitation across the region.
