Agartala, June 24: The Central Government has cleared a major rural road development package for Tripura under the fourth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-IV), paving the way for improved connectivity in several remote habitations across the state.
The Ministry of Rural Development has sanctioned 96 road projects under the first batch of PMGSY-IV for the 2026-27 financial year. The projects will cover nearly 164 kilometres of road network and involve an investment of Rs 211.71 crore.
The newly approved works are aimed at connecting 96 unserved rural habitations with durable all-weather roads, a move expected to ease transportation challenges faced by residents in interior areas. Improved road infrastructure is likely to enhance access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, markets and government services.
The projects would help reduce travel time, improve movement of goods and services, and support economic activities in rural regions. Better connectivity is also expected to strengthen implementation of welfare programmes and encourage development in areas that have remained relatively isolated.
The latest approval adds to the extensive road infrastructure already created in Tripura under various phases of PMGSY. Since the launch of the scheme, the Centre has sanctioned more than 1,500 roads and dozens of bridges across the state, resulting in a vast rural road network that has transformed connectivity in many villages.
With the new projects set to begin in the coming months, Tripura is expected to witness another significant expansion of its rural transport infrastructure, further integrating remote communities with growth centres and essential public services.
The PMGSY programme remains one of the flagship rural development initiatives of the Government of India, focusing on providing reliable road access to rural habitations and supporting inclusive development across the country.
