Soil collapse during excavation leaves two dead, one injured in Tripura’s Teliamura

Teliamura, June 13: A devastating accident at Chakmaghat in Tripura’s Khowai district claimed the lives of two men and left another seriously injured after a section of excavated earth suddenly collapsed on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred in the Chakmaghat Muslim Basti area under Teliamura sub-division, where three residents of Kunjamura had reportedly gone to collect soil for construction-related work. While earth was being excavated with the help of a vehicle, a large portion of the soil embankment gave way, trapping all three individuals underneath.
The accident triggered an immediate rescue effort by local residents, who rushed to the site and began digging through the debris before emergency teams arrived.
After a strenuous operation, one of the victims, Amulya Dhan Jamatia, was pulled out alive with severe injuries. He was first admitted to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital and later shifted to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment.
The other two victims, identified as James Jamatia (20) and Ashahari Jamatia (30), could not be saved and were declared dead after being recovered from beneath the collapsed soil.
Following the incident, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, accompanied by Teliamura Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty and senior officials, visited Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital to meet the affected families.
On behalf of the state administration, ex-gratia assistance of Rs 4 lakh each was provided to the next of kin of the deceased. Officials also assured the families that the government would extend all possible support during this difficult period.
Expressing sorrow over the loss of lives, the minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and said the administration would continue to monitor the situation and assist those affected by the tragedy.
