Agartala, Dec 10: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday inaugurated the International Human Rights Day celebration organised by the Tripura Human Rights Commission at Pragna Bhavan, stressing that human values must be nurtured in thought, behaviour and consciousness to protect human rights.
“Our life reflects who we are. Through life’s experiences we learn what is right and what is not. To uphold human rights, every individual must cultivate values,” he said.
The Chief Minister emphasised that strengthening the four pillars of democracy is essential for safeguarding human rights and ensuring proper implementation of human rights laws.
He added that the Constitution of India has incorporated all provisions necessary for the protection of human rights, and therefore public awareness about these laws is crucial. He cautioned against the misuse of human rights as a tool for unethical movements, disorderly conduct or wrongful benefits.
Dr. Saha highlighted the need for proper guidance on where people should seek help for resolving domestic issues, challenges faced by women and children, and other social problems.
This year’s theme for International Human Rights Day is “Human Rights Are Part of Our Everyday Life.”
The Chief Minister said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always remained conscious and alert regarding the protection of human rights in governance and policy implementation.
“Be it Ujjwala Yojana, PM Awas Yojana, Ayushman Bharat or other welfare schemes for children, women, farmers and unemployed youth—human rights remain a priority under the Prime Minister’s leadership,” he added.
He stated that the present state government is equally sensitive and proactive on matters of human rights, taking immediate action whenever violations are reported. He also noted that law and order is intrinsically linked with human rights protection.
Recalling past neglect of the Northeast, Dr. Saha said the region is now progressing due to the Prime Minister’s Act East Policy, which has strengthened peace and harmony. Tripura is also moving forward with multiple development initiatives. During the programme, he formally released the new newsletter of the Tripura Human Rights Commission. The Commission was established in 2016.
Speaking at the event, Tripura Human Rights Commission Chairman Arindam Lodh said the essence of human rights is deeply connected with the spirit of Vande Mataram, as fundamental rights have emerged from the core principles of human rights.
Other dignitaries addressing the gathering included Director General of Police Anurag, Law Secretary Shankari Das, Advocate General Shaktimoy Chakraborty and Tripura Women’s Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma.
Secretary of the Tripura Human Rights Commission Dhanbabu Reang delivered the welcome address, while officer Dipankar Pal gave the vote of thanks.
