Agartala, Sept 25: With Durga Puja expected to draw large crowds and a sharp increase in vehicular movement, the Traffic Police has rolled out a comprehensive traffic management plan for Agartala, with special focus on congestion control, parking discipline, enforcement of traffic rules and tighter scrutiny of Puja passes.
Traffic SP Kanta Jangir announced the measures at a press conference at Traffic Bhavan in the AD Nagar police lines on Friday, outlining the department’s preparations for managing traffic during the festive period.
According to the Traffic Police, Nagerjala Bridge, City Centre and Orient Chowmuhani have been identified among the key points where traffic pressure is expected to rise considerably during the Puja days. Traffic arrangements at these locations will be modified depending on the movement and volume of vehicles.
The department will also intensify action against unauthorised parking, violations of one-way and no-entry restrictions and prolonged parking of heavy vehicles on busy roads.
As part of the preparations, the Traffic Police has held discussions with traders, market committees and residents of Maharajganj Bazar to understand the causes of recurring congestion and work out measures to ease traffic movement.
SP Jangir stressed that effective traffic management during the festival would require active cooperation from citizens, traders, transport organisations and other stakeholders. She urged motorists to follow traffic regulations and use only designated parking spaces.
Traffic personnel will maintain enhanced surveillance and coordination at major congestion points throughout the Puja period, she said.
The Traffic Police is also tightening the procedure for issuing Puja passes following concerns over their misuse in previous years.
SP Jangir said applicants with pending traffic challans will not be issued Puja passes. She said the decision follows clear directions from Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.
To make the process more transparent and efficient, the department is also working with the Directorate of Information Technology (DIT) on a digital system for issuing Puja passes.
The Traffic SP further explained the procedures for clearing pending challans. Challans issued before April 2026 can be settled through the e-Challan portal, Virtual Court portal or the physical court. Challans issued after April 2026, however, will have to be cleared through the Traffic Unit and will not be sent to court.
The department has also initiated steps towards introducing the Next-Gen Challan system.
As part of the Puja traffic plan, no-entry restrictions will remain in force in Agartala city from 5 pm to 1 am during the Puja days.
The Traffic Police has appealed to citizens, traders, transport operators and other stakeholders to cooperate with enforcement personnel and follow the prescribed traffic arrangements to ensure safer and smoother movement during the festival.
